Often trees and shrubs grown in warmer climates have a difficult time surviving or getting established in our zone which is 4. The stress imposed on them in their first few years after planting due to climate shock can set back thier normal growth dramatically. You can recognize locally grown by the amount of leaves or buds present on the plant. They should be the same as like trees or shrubs growing naturally in the area. If they already have leaves or much larger buds they were grown in a much warmer climate, making them prone to climate shock. The chances of survival are much better if the plant was locally grown.
